The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Joseph Fox (ASN: 6784647), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving with Battery D, 6th Field Artillery, on 29 april 1933, at Fort Hoyle, MD. When a canoe containing two members of the Civilian Conservation Corps capsized in the turbulent waters of the Gunpowder River at Fort Hoyle, Maryland, throwing the occupants who were unable to swim into the water, Private Fox dived into the river and swam to their aid with a rope, thereby enabling them to be towed to shore.
