The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Ordnanceman First Class Carl Eugene Adams, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a member of the air crew of a United States Navy Patrol Plane on 12 July 1943, while protecting a convoy from bombing attack by two enemy Focke-Wulf bombers. Aviation Ordnanceman First Class Adams was a member of the air crew of a relatively slow and under-armed plane that broke up several enemy air attacks on the convoy his plane was escorting. His coolness under fire contributed to the spirit of the air crew that enabled the plane to prevent the enemy air attacks from reaching their objectives. During this engagement many hits were obtained on the enemy planes. The heroism and devotion to duty displayed by Aviation Ordnanceman First Class Adams were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
