Cherry, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving as a crew member of a helicopter in Helicopter Utility Squadron TWO Detachment, attached to U.S.S. LEYTE (CV-32), in effecting the rescue of a drowning aircraft pilot in the Sea of Japan on 14 October 1950.
