The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor), [then First Lieutenant] Charles F. Marsh (ASN: 0-1015513), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 702d Tank Battalion, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 18 January 1945 in Luxembourg. During the assault against Nocher, Luxembourg, on 18 January 1945, Captain Marsh led his assault gun platoon in support of a tank platoon which received heavy losses from enemy fire and mine fields. Immediately perceiving the situation, Captain Marsh led his more vulnerable platoon forward into the town and succeeded in overrunning the enemy positions and taking many prisoners. Facing a critical shortage of ammunition, Captain Marsh led a party on foot to the disabled tanks and collected enough ammunition to continue the attack and clear the entire sector. The gallantry, superior leadership, and resourcefulness displayed by Captain Marsh were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
