The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Leroy E. Jubela (ASN: 38676272), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 November 1944 in France. While Private Jubela and a comrade were digging in on a hill near Folschviller, France, on 26 November 1944, the enemy discovered their position and fired an artillery and mortar concentration into the area. As their foxhole was not deep enough for protection Private Jubela deliberately covered his comrade with his body in attempting to shield him from the shell fragments. A mortar shell landed close to the two men, mortally wounding Private Jubela, but only slightly wounding the man he shielded. The courage, unselfishness, and loyal devotion to duty to his comrade displayed by Private Jubela were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
