The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Tandy E. Jackson (ASN: 0-1315318), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 4 March 1945 in Germany. Near Niederzerf, Germany, on 4 March 1945, Captain Jackson, a heavy weapons company commander, volunteered to locate and establish contact with a rifle company which had become separated from the battalion. A patrol previously sent out with the same mission had been driven back by heavy enemy opposition. Alone, Captain Jackson infiltrated through enemy held woods, encountering eight sentries, four of whom he killed and four he captured. He successfully located the company and led them to a position from which they could maintain contact with the battalion. The inspiring courage and exemplary aggressiveness displayed by Captain Jackson were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
