The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John R. Singleton (ASN: 0-533479), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 10 March 1945 in Germany. During the assault on Weiskirchen, Germany, on 10 March 1945, Captain Singleton’s company was temporarily delayed by frontal fire from an enemy machine gun. Crawling forward alone, he located the gun positions and when only thirty yards from the enemy rose to his feet and, with rifle fire, killed two of the crew and drove off the third man. Returning, he led his company into the town where he personally led his men in the savage hand-to-hand struggle to seize the town. The courage, initiative, and aggressive leadership displayed by Captain Singleton were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
