Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 14 (January 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Frank W. Mitchell (ASN: 38231890), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 4 December 1944 in France. In an assault on the enemy, the platoon in which Private Mitchell served as a rifleman was temporarily delayed by intense fire from an enemy machine gun. With utter disregard for his own safety, Private Mitchell, in company with his platoon leader, advanced under the heavy fire across exposed terrain to attack the enemy position, both suffering severe wounds from the enemy fire. Despite his wounds, Private Mitchell carried his injured platoon leader to a small defilade to administer aid and care for him. The courage, aggressiveness, and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Private Mitchell were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
