His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Smith (ASN: 3853428), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 11 November 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Smith, in company with another comrade, voluntarily advanced under an intense bombardment from enemy anti-aircraft artillery, mortar, and small arms fire in a vehicle to reach the commander of the battalion, who had become a casualty, evacuating him to safety. The personal bravery, resourcefulness, and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Staff Sergeant Smith were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
