Headquarters, 27th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 48 (July 28, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Peter John Sangray (ASN: 39603556), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Charan Danshii, Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 4 July 1944. While in action against enemy patrols which were attacking his platoon’s section of the regimental perimeter during the hours of darkness, Private Sangray killed an enemy soldier who had crawled to the edge of his fox-hole, and in doing so revealed his position to other enemy troops who threw two hand grenades into his fox-hole. He at once threw one grenade out and pounded the other one into the ground with his helmet, by holding the helmet over the grenade until it exploded he saved another soldier’s life as well as his own, thus preventing a gap in the perimeter.
