Headquarters, 70th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 53 (July 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Marlin A. Stewart (ASN: 16109724), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 70th Reconnaissance Troop, 70th Infantry Division, on 3 March 1945. While manning his 50 caliber machine gun from the exposed turret position of an armored car, Technician Stewart was wounded by shell fragments as he fired upon enemy strong points near Emmersweiler, France. After receiving first aid from his comrades, he refused to be evacuated and ordered that the mission be continued. Although wounded, he continued to fire upon the enemy for three hours under heavy artillery fire which riddled his armored car. By his courageous action, he denied the enemy the use of its strong positions in this sector of fire and successfully completed his mission.
