The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Lenn D. McRae (ASN: 7082857), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company **, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. During the ******** Campaign in Tunisia in 1943, Staff Sergeant McRae led a two-man patrol far behind the enemy line, crawled up the hill within 35 yards of a fortified, dug-in enemy observation post and threw well-aimed grenades into their pill box, one of them landing directly in the box and killing the observers who were at that time directing enemy artillery fire on our positions. After this he slowly crawled into the enemy observation post and destroyed all of the wire and radio installations. As soon as he started back down the hill, enemy machine gun fire broke loose, aimed at him from all directions – the flanks – the front and the rear – as he was well behind the enemy lines. He succeeded in bringing back to his Commanding Officer, a sketch showing the enemy disposition behind their own lines. Staff Sergeant McRae’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
