Headquarters, 27th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (July 29, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Field Artillery) Glenn S. Knapp (ASN: 0-339945), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Hinashisu, Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 23 June 1944. Above and beyond the call of duty, Captain Knapp volunteered to go into an area covered by enemy fire, in an effort to recover two wounded soldiers. He courageously and aggressively led a small party until he was mortally wounded by enemy fire. Captain Knapp’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
