The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Herman R. Gendron (ASN: 36869643), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 24th Infantry Division near Palo, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 20 October 1944. Private Gendron was a member of a rifle platoon advancing on two enemy pillboxes when the platoon received heavy machine gun and sniper fire. A member of the platoon was wounded and fell into the fire lane. Private Gendron, with complete disregard for his own safety, crawled out into the land in the face of heavy enemy fire and helped carry the wounded soldier to cover. Private Gendron’s outstanding display of courage in unhesitatingly risking his life to save a fellow soldier reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
