The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Herbert E. DeGrand, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a Field Artillery Battalion of the 34th Infantry Division in Tunisia. The position of Private First Class DeGrand’s battery was attacked during the morning by German Panzer Kw. IV tanks and infantry. In the afternoon the battery ran short of ammunition. This information was sent to the ammunition dump 700 yards away, and Private First Class DeGrand immediately started forward to the gun positions, with the ammunition truck and despite a heavy barrage of enemy fire, drove the truck into the position, thus enabling the battery to continue firing. Private First Class DeGrand’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
