The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles K. Horst, Jr., United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the Battery A, 50th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Self Propelled), in action between Chinhung-ni, Korea, 8 on December 1950. On that date, Private First Class Horst was manning a machinegun position in a defensive perimeter near Chinhung-ni when the enemy, trying to infiltrate, opened fire with automatic weapons. With complete disregard for his safety, exposing himself to the heavy automatic weapons fire, he located the enemy positions. Then, despite repeated warning to take cover, he remained in his exposed position delivering such a heavy volume of machinegun fire that the enemy was forces to withdraw. His heroic actions in preventing an infiltration of the perimeter were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
