The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Peter R. Stankiewicz, Jr. (MCSN: 607299), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against dissident forces as Hsin-Ho, China, on 5 April 1947. Hearing rifle and grenade fire in the immediate vicinity of his sentinel post at the ammunition supply point, Private First Class Stankiewicz unhesitatingly pressed forward and engaged in a fire fight with an overwhelming number of dissident forces. Although pinned down by hostile fire and seriously wounded by an enemy grenade, he delivered accurate and concentrated rifle fire and succeeded in diverting the advance until reinforcements arrived. His daring initiative, fighting spirit, and unselfish devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
