The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Herman J. Pizzi (MCSN: 1214155), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Team Leader of Company H, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on the night of 6 October 1952. When the enemy delivered an intense artillery and mortar barrage on the forward outpost followed by an assault by infantry troops, Private First Class Pizzi fearlessly exposed himself to the deadly enemy fire to check his men and administer aid to the wounded. Despite his determined efforts, the men of his fire team were killed by enemy fire and he was severely shaken by concussion, Although his weapon was destroyed, he continued to move from one position to another, aiding other wounded Marines. Organizing his few remaining comrades, he directed the evacuation of the critically wounded to the main line of resistance and, although painfully wounded by enemy fire, succeeded in guiding the group back to friendly lines before he collapsed from shock and concussion. Upon recovering consciousness, he volunteered to lead a rescue party to evacuate the remainder of the casualties. By his indomitable initiative, resolute determination and outstanding courage, Private First Class Pizzi served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
