The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Donald F. Anderson (MCSN: 2183557), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company B, 3d Tank Battalion, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 19 September 1966, Private First Class Anderson was driving the lead tank of an armored column when an anti-tank weapon penetrated the lower front slope plate of his vehicle, severing his right foot. Immediately the column was ambushed, receiving a heavy volume of fire from both sides of the road. Although in excruciating pain and suffering from shock, Private First Class Anderson courageously maintained control of the tank and responded to the orders of his Tank Commander. Realizing the seriousness of his wound and the fact that immediate medical assistance would be impossible, he made a tourniquet for his leg from his web belt. Using his left foot on both the accelerator and brake, Private First Class Anderson controlled the tank while backing it out of the intense crossfire. His resolute performance in the face of extreme pain, instilled great pride and esprit de corps in his crew members and was instrumental in successfully routing the enemy force while preventing serious injury to is companions. By his exceptional fortitude and presence of mind, inspiring perseverance, and unwavering devotion to duty, Private First Class Anderson upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
