Willard Wyman graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1919. Originally members of that class were the Class of 1921, but because of World War I were graduated early in 1918, and subsequently graduated again in 1919. He retired in 1958 as a U.S. Army General.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Brigadier General Willard Gordon Wyman (ASN: 0-12356), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Assistant Division Commander, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, near Colleville-sur-le-Mer, France. At a time when the heavy rifle, machine gun, artillery and rocket fire of the enemy seriously threatened the invasion effort on this part of the beach. Brigadier General Wyman came ashore directly behind the leading wave of troops. Due to enemy action, many organizational leaders had become casualties. With disregard for his own personal safety, Brigadier General Wyman moved up and down the fire-swept beach personally directing the movement of the men and the vehicles which had landed. Under his direction the men were reorganized and successfully assaulted the enemy positions. The gallantry and outstanding leadership displayed by Brigadier General Wyman exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
