The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant Deecie Harlan Talley (ASN: 34107064), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Luxembourg, on 21 January 1945. On the evening of 21 January 1945, Sergeant Talley’s company held high ground overlooking the enemy-held town of Fouhren, Luxembourg. When Sergeant Talley observed a force of enemy infantrymen advancing to attack his company he hurled two grenades at the group, wounding two and driving the remainder to cover. Then, braving small arms and artillery fire he took an exposed position upon a hedgerow and delivered such effective automatic rifle fire that he killed two, wounded four more of the enemy and forced the others to withdraw. His daring action undoubtedly saved his company from serious losses. Technical Sergeant Talley’s personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 4th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
