Headquarters, SEVENTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 15 (August 12, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Oscar L. Gordon (ASN: 0-1310594), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces on 11 July 1943, approximately 4 miles south of ****, in France. Lieutenant Gordon, accompanying an isolated parachute unit, was engaged by the enemy. To effect the withdrawal of his force and wounded men toward friendly lines, he voluntarily manned a light machine gun and advanced toward the enemy. While engaged in this self-sacrificing mission in the face of severe hostile fire Lieutenant Gordon lost his life. Second Lieutenant Gordon’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 82d Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
