The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) William Henry Feery (ASN: 0-1300630), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 7 February 1945, in Germany. Captain Feery fearlessly exposed himself to accurate enemy small arms, mortar and artillery fire to successfully lead his rifle company in an attack against a fortified enemy town. When elements of his company were pinned down, Captain Feery, under direct fire, re-organized his company and led the assault on the town, directing house-to-house fighting. He organized defensive positions and held the captured town until relieved. The apparent disregard for intense enemy fire and firm determination of purpose displayed by Captain Feery set an inspiring example for his men. The extraordinary heroism and courageous actions of Captain Feery exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 78th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
