The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Daniel Alfriend Stuart (NSN: 0-70324), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. MADISON (DD-425) during frequent shore bombardments and engagements with sub-surface craft in the Menton Area on the France-Italian Riviera during September 1944. A courageous and skilled leader, Commander Stuart capably commanded his ship in repeated and successful firing missions against hostile shore batteries and troop concentrations that blocked the Allied advance, assisting by his accurate and devastating fire in breaking up enemy counterattacks against our ground forces and in neutralizing and destroying many vital targets opposing the Allied occupation of the coastal areas. When his ship was attacked by a large formation of human submarines on 10 September 1944, he calmly and skillfully avoided each assault by alert maneuvering and directed the MADISON in sinking three of these craft. His professional skill and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Commander Stuart and the United States Naval Service.
