The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Carl Henry Bruggemeier, II (MCSN: 0-50189), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy in Korea. On 23 January 1953, Second Lieutenant Bruggemeier served as section leader for a flight of Marine Attack Aircraft against an enemy command post overlooking friendly front line forces. Despite limited visibility because of adverse weather and oncoming darkness, he promptly located the carefully camouflaged hostile position on top of a hill and immediately initiated a daring dive toward the precipitous terrain. Disregarding intense and accurate defensive fire directed at him, he scored a direct hit that left the command post engulfed in flames and caused a large secondary explosion. Second Lieutenant Bruggemeier’s exceptional bombing accuracy and outstanding initiative were largely responsible for the success of a mission that destroyed a major enemy headquarters and disrupted front line enemy communications. His courageous conduct, remarkable aggressiveness and steadfast devotion to duty throughout reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
