The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal William C. Enright (MCSN: 894035), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Machine-gun Squad of Company K, Third Battalion, Twenty-second Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 15 May 1945. During a desperate enemy counterattack against his company’s defense on Sugar Loaf Hill, Corporal Enright was ordered to move his squad into a front line position to reinforce the defense. Undeterred by darkness and intense enemy fire, he led his squad into position and placed his machine gun in action. Harassed by enemy grenade and mortar fire throughout the night, he remained at his post with his gun crew and repulsed numerous enemy attempts to penetrate his company’s defense, thereby materially aiding his company in withstanding the numerous counterattacks. By his outstanding leadership and courageous conduct throughout, Corporal Enright upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
