The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Private First Class Clyde L. Beagle, Jr. (MCSN: 1874679), United States Marine Corps, for voluntary acts of heroism while serving as a member of the initial rescue unit from Naval Activities, Port Lyautey, Kenitra, Morocco on 1 – 2 March 1960, in the Agadir, Morocco earthquake disaster. During the ours of darkness with additional earth tremors reported imminent, Private First Class Beagle tunneled into the torn and twisted masonry completely out of sight of his fellow workers. These buildings in the city of Agadir, Morocco, were three to five stories high and were now reduced to piles of rubble about eighteen feet in height. With the aid of a flashlight in a space barely large enough for one man, he chiseled the reinforced concrete with a wrecking bar and removed debris bare-handed in order to follow the sound of the human voice entombed within. After two and one half hours of labor, despite the danger of cave-in, and with due disregard of his own personal safety, Private First Class Beagle effected the safe removal of a human being who had been entombed for approximately twenty-four hours. His conduct, personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
