The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Logan V. Alvis, United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with the Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands, on 29 October 1942. Corporal Alvis was one of five enlisted men who volunteered to accompany Second Lieutenant Harold K. Taylor on a patrol into the area west of the Matanikau River, Guadalcanal, where enemy forces were definitely known to be located. In the course of the patrol two enemy field pieces were located and put out of action under direct observation of hostile forces and these men distinguished themselves by gallant conduct in the face of the enemy throughout the entire patrol.
