The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain Anthony F. Milavic, United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States in various capacities with the THIRD Marine Division in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 6 May 1968 to 17 May 1969. Throughout this period, Captain Milavic performed his demanding duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner. Following his initial assignment as Order of Battle Officer with the G-2 Section, Captain Milavic, then a First Lieutenant, was reassigned as the Assistant G-2 for Task Force HOTEL and continued to provide a consistently high level of support to his command. Working tirelessly and with meticulous attention to detail, he evaluated large quantities of intelligence data and developed schemes of maneuver which contributed significantly to the success of numerous combat operations. Serving temporarily as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-2, on several occasions, he ably supervised the activities of his section and, maintaining liaison with intelligence units of other commands, provided an accurate evaluation of the current tactical situation. Reassigned as the Intelligence Officer of the Fourth Marines on 15 February 1969, a billet normally assigned to an officer of higher rank, Captain Milavic quickly molded his staff into an efficient intelligence team and implemented a system which ensured the rapid dissemination of pertinent information to combat-committed units. With complete disregard for his own safety, he repeatedly visited forward areas to exploit enemy contacts and develop intelligence reports which proved invaluable in coordinating strikes against hostile targets. His keen analytical ability and sound judgment earned the respect and admiration of all who served with him and greatly enhanced the operational effectiveness of his unit. By his initiative, extraordinary professionalism, and unwavering devotion to duty, Captain Milavic rendered distinguished service to his country and thereby upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. (Captain Milavic is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
