The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John G. Freeman (MCSN: 0-44615), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy while serving with a Marine All Weather Squadron in Korea. On the night of 14 August 1952, Captain Freeman, flying in close support of friendly troops, engaged an enemy ground force of battalion strength attacking front line positions of the United States I Corps. Despite mountainous terrain and extremely limited visibility, he initiated repeated bombing attacks against he vanguard of the assault, inflicting heavy casualties on the attacking enemy who withdrew in disorder. Captain Freeman’s superb airmanship under particularly hazardous flight conditions was largely responsible for the successful defense of critical front line positions. His courageous conduct, exceptional professional skill and zealous devotion to duty throughout reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
