Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 311 (February 1943)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Seaman First Class Harold O. Davies, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a pointer on Gun Mount No. 3 aboard the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. YORKTOWN (CV-5), during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Battle of Midway on 4 June 1942. When all of the nineteen other men of his crew had been either killed or wounded, Seaman First Class Davies, with cool courage and utter disregard for his own personal safety, continued to point and fire the guns of his mount while they were being loaded and kept in operation by injured members of his crew. His heroic devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
