    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant Charles Kendrick (MCSN: 0-10241), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane in Marine Fighting Squadron TWO HUNDRED TWENTY-THREE (VMF-223), in actions against enemy Japanese forces during the Solomon Islands Campaign. Between 24 August and 9 September 1942, Second Lieutenant Kendrick shot down five enemy aircraft in aerial combat in the Solomon Islands Area. His courage throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
