The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Herbert A. Bradley (MCSN: 0-23918), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on many dangerous missions as a pilot attached to Marine Torpedo Bombing Squadron TWO HUNDRED THIRTY-TWO (VMTB-232) during action against Japanese forces in the Solomons and Western Carolines from 28 February 1944 to 20 February 1945. During this period Lieutenant Bradley took part in twenty-one strikes, ten ground support missions, three anti-submarine missions and thirty-five anti-submarine patrols. On 2 March 1944, while subject to intense enemy anti-aircraft fire and despite damage to his plane Lieutenant Bradley scored a direct hit and sank three enemy barges in Simpson Harbor. On 5 March 1944, while under enemy fire he hit and exploded an enemy ammunition dump on the West Fork of the Torokina River. On 21 March 1944 he scored four direct hits and destroyed an enemy gun position northeast of Hill 150 at Bougainville. His skill and gallantry have inspired his fellow airmen. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
