Herbert Wilkerson enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1942, a year after graduating from Erskine College. He was commissioned in 1945 and was integrated into the regular Marine Corps in 1946. He served in three wars from World War II through Vietnam in the FIRST Marine Division, and retired as a Marine Corps Major General in 1978.
