The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander John Croysdale Martin, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. HAMMERHEAD (SS-364), on the SECOND War Patrol of that submarine during the period 9 September 1944 to 2 November 1944, in enemy controlled waters of the South China Sea. In a series of daring and well-executed night surface actions, Commander Martin directed his submarine in three attacks on two enemy convoys which resulted in the sinking of six hostile ships and in the damaging of one enemy cargo vessel. Skillfully maneuvering his ship in the face of enemy countermeasures and in very dangerous waters, he contributed materially to the success of his missions. By his courage, professional skill and devotion to duty, Commander Martin upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
