The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Lawrence Edwin Gilbert (NSN: 0-138183), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. LST TWO HUNDRED EIGHTY-TWO (LST-282), when that vessel was subjected to an enemy aerial attack and completely destroyed during the amphibious invasion of Southern France on 15 August 1944. Seriously injured and momentarily stunned when thrown to the bridge deck from his conning station by the blast of an enemy glider bomb, Lieutenant Gilbert unhesitatingly struggled through exploding ammunition and heavy black smoke from fires ignited in the cargo of motor trucks loaded aboard to carry a severely wounded signalman below, adjusting the man’s life preserver and helping him over the side. Gallantly disregarding the grave danger to himself, he continued his valiant efforts by assisting a helpless officer into the water and, after securing him by a life belt to the rudder post, risked his life amid fire and explosions to search for help, remaining in the water for two hours until both men were recovered in an unconscious condition by rescue craft. His courage, fortitude and heroic spirit of self-sacrifice in the face of great peril reflect the highest credit upon Lieutenant Gilbert and the United States Naval Service.
