The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Coast Artillery Corps) Frederick L. Dengler, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As a member of the Intelligence Section of the General Staff, American Expeditionary Forces, Colonel Dengler efficiently organized and directed with rare ability the operation of the subsection dealing with the enemy’s man power, war material, economic conditions, prisoners and documents, including the enemy press. Later he was sent to the United States to expedite the organization and training of the intelligence personnel of the division selected for overseas service, and also to assist in the coordination of the work of the Intelligence Section of the American Expeditionary Forces with that of the War Department. In all these positions he displayed rare judgment, great initiative, and unremitting devotion to duty.
