In February 1944, George Vasey became ill and it became so ill he relinquished his duties and was evacuated. Upon recovery, he was appointed to command of the 6th Division and on March 5, 1945, was flying to assume command when the Hudson aircraft he was in crashed into the sea off Cairns, Queensland, killing him and all others aboard.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major General George A. Vasey, Australian Imperial Force, for extraordinary heroism in action against enemy forces in New Guinea, during the Papuan Campaign, 23 July 1942 to 8 January 1943. As Commander, Seventh Division, Australian Army, Major General Vasey displayed extraordinary courage, marked efficiency and precise execution of operations during the Papuan Campaign. The intrepidity and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Major General Vasey reflect highest credit upon himself and the Allied Forces.
