The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant William Wendell, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with Troop C, 6th Cavalry, in action against hostile Moros on Patian Island, Philippine Islands, 4 July 1909. Sergeant Wendell with other men entered a cave occupied by a desperate enemy and in the face of a heavy fire, with utter disregard for his personal safety, aided in forcing the outlaws to abandon their stronghold, which resulted in their destruction by our forces.
