The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Christian Channing Gross, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with 27th Infantry, 33d Division, A.E.F. (Siberia), in action near Uspanka, Siberia, 11 June 1919. While leading a combat patrol Lieutenant Gross was fired on by an unknown force of enemy; he left his patrol, after giving them orders to fire on the enemy, and advanced through a fire-swept zone to an advantageous position on a hill from which he assisted greatly in forcing the retirement of the enemy.
