The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant of Artillery Robert Dano, Army of France, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 308th Company, 3d Battalion of Light Tanks, Assault Artillery near Somme-Py, France, October 3 – 8, 1918. Lieutenant Dano displayed conspicuous gallantry during operations of the Second American Division, and when his captain was killed and the company had suffered heavy losses, he promptly effected a reorganization. With great heroism and able leadership, he then pushed forward the assault in the face of heavy shell fire.
