    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Medical Corps) Charles W. Comfort, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 102d Infantry Regiment (Attached), 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Seicheprey, France, 20 April 1918. Major Comfort administered first-aid for 36 hours, without rest or relief, to numerous wounded in the open, almost constantly under heavy artillery fire, and assisted in their evacuation thereby setting an example of heroic performance of his duties under the most trying circumstances.

Major comfort displayed the highest courage and devotion to duty being continually present on the front line administering first-aid to the wounded under violent artillery and machine-gun fire.
