The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Joseph Preston Woodville (ASN: 1290986), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 112th Machine-Gun Battalion, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois-de-Consenvoye, France, 15 October 1918. Private Woodville remained at his gun until the position was destroyed, the other gun sentry killed, and he himself wounded. He refused first aid until the bombardment had lifted and kept up the morale of the other members of his section by his heroism and cheerfulness.
