By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Edward J. Welsh (ASN: 2409727), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Welsh distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Bois Grand Fontaine, France, on 24 September 1918. While his platoon was holding outpost line, under heavy shell fire and in the open, the platoon commander and all sergeants having been killed or wounded, Corporal Welsh promptly took charge, reorganized the platoon, and held the sector until relieved.
