    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Fred R. Weiss (ASN: 1097204), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery F, 21st Field Artillery, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montauville, France, 24 October 1918. When shell fire had ignited the powder store of his battery, Private Weiss, in his stocking feet, was the first to enter the dump, and single-handed, pulled numerous boxes of ammunition to safety, despite the danger from explosion and increased enemy shell fire.
