The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Roy Weigel (ASN: 42617), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Mihiel, France, 12 September 1918. Sergeant Weigel showed entire disregard for his own safety in making several attempts to locate the positions of machine guns whose heavy fire was hindering the advance of his battalion. He was killed while leading a rush upon one of the guns which he had located.
