The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Herbert Ward (ASN: 57104), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Berzy-le-Sec, France, 19 July 1918. After his platoon leader had been wounded, Sergeant Ward reorganized the platoon under heavy fire and led it to its objective. He then led forward a patrol to locate the enemy positions, during which reconnaissance he was wounded by a machine-gun bullet. The ball lodged above the right eye. After receiving first aid he returned to the unit for duty. During a subsequent attack in the Argonne he was again wounded.
