By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert Shelley Waite, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 11 October 1918 while his battalion was attacking German entrenchments at Cunel Woods, Lieutenant Waite was shot through the arm by a machine gun. He continued the attack with his company and charged the machine gun nest. The charge was unsuccessful, and his company was driven back. He reformed his company, again charged the nest and captured it. The success of the attack was due to the courage and self-sacrifice of Lieutenant Waite. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
