The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private James A. Campbell, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 22 January 1865, while serving with Company A, 2d New York Cavalry, in action at Woodstock, Virginia. While his command was retreating before superior numbers, Private Campbell voluntarily rushed back with one companion and rescued his commanding officer, who had been unhorsed and left behind. At Amelia Courthouse, Virginia, on 5 April 1865, Private Campbell captured two battle flags.
