The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Mellen F. Tuttle (ASN: 67163), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 103d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on Hill 190, near Chateau-Thierry, France, 20 July 1918. When all of the men of the automatic-rifle team of which he was a member had been wounded, Private Tuttle voluntarily advanced alone, attacked a number of enemy machine-gun nests which were holding up the advance, and forced the enemy to retreat, thereby making possible the continued forward movement of his detachment.
